Wednesday
2/12/03
We went to what we had hoped to be our last OB appointment
today. We were praying for good news. Something along the
lines of "you are 8 cm go to the hospital NOW".
Gained
2 lbs in a week. The nurse took my BP, but didn't comment.
Dr. F came in and checked me. He said I was 2cm and head
was pretty low. We had been told the week before by
another OB to expect a 9 lb'er, Dr F didn't seem to think
baby was that big. YAY - sigh of relief on my end!! He
said my BP was up a bit and since I was 40 wks as of
tomorrow, he didn't want to keep my pregnant any longer.
He made me a date with a bag of pitocin for 2/14/03 or
2/15/03. He said they'd call me when space was available,
so basically we just had to wait it out.
I
really was not excited about the whole pitocin thing. I
went thru that with Mckenzie and it was awful. So, David
and I took the kids for a long walk - hoping to jump start
something! All it got me was frustration - lots of icky
false labor. Grandma Lisa decided to come down tonight and
take Thu off work "just in case". Here's to
hoping!
Thursday
2/13/03 (Due Date)
Thanks
to all those lovely contractions last night, I could not
drag my butt out of bed before 11am. I was soooo tired!
Myndi called and said she wanted to take me to lunch and
shopping. David, Lisa and McKenzie were able to spend some
quality time together too, so that was nice. We
stopped by mom's work... everyone is sooo anxious for this
little one to make his/her appearance.
We
went to Subway, ate a big lunch (Subway Melt, pretzels,
soda, and a bowl of potato soup to be exact) and then it
was off to Target. We walked the store for an hour and a
half. All that got me was a big fat backache!! All this
effort for nothing, we decided we needed some Cold Stone
to make it all better. Yummers! Cake batter ice cream with
caramel syrup and cookie dough add ins in a waffle bowl!
Just what the doctor ordered... but still no labor!!
Grandma
Lisa and Daddy made yummy enchiladas for dinner - spicy
food = contractions? Not for me!! But boy was it good! We
sat and watched Survivor... my little turkey kickin around
all the while!
Friday
2/14/03 Valentine's Day!
I
guess in the back of my mind, I went to sleep knowing that
today could be the day, but I really didn't think it would
happen. At this point I'm thinking this baby will never
come out! About 5am I started getting some HARD
contractions. They seriously hurt! At 6:30am the phone
rang, woke everyone up! (Lisa and Myndi both spent the
night). I jabbed David to run and catch it... he fell
outta bed and just barely got to the phone in time. It
would have taken me about an hour to get to the phone if i
had tried!
It
was the hospital... they said we could come in at 7:30.
Yikes!! Was it REALLY time?! I made sure my bags were
completely packed, did my hair and makeup and got the kids
up so they could open their valentine's day gifts before
we left. Lisa and Myndi were going to get them off to
school. We took a few pictures and loaded up the van...
off we went! Got checked in (and met our WONDERFUL nurse
Lori) at 8am. Room 132 I believe or maybe it was 32... not
sure b/c I did not leave the room until we checked out.
Got
all hooked up to the monitor, which was a process... made
me feel like a whale, Lori could not get the darn thing
fastened. She assured me that it was the belt and not me!
Finally got all hooked up and about 8:30ish my Doctor came
in and checked me... 3cm!! Not too shabby way to start
labor. He said that I was very thin and head was very low.
He stripped my membranes first - Good Lord did that ever
hurt! Then he proceeded to break my water, which took
several minutes. I guess my water was not ready to pop! In
the process, baby's head got a little scratched up :( Oh
yeah, and then the order for pitocin - dangnabit, I
thought he may have forgotten about that!
So
by 9am contractions were coming in FULL force. OWIE! They
hurt SOO bad! About 9:30ish, my mom, Lisa and McKenzie
came in. I don't remember much for the next half hour...
just lots of pain... ouch and only a couple of seconds in
between each stupid pitocin induced contraction. Just
before 10am, Myndi joined the party.
At
10am the nurse checked me and I was at 4-5 cm. Since my
doctor had told me earlier that morning that any cervix
change and I could have my epidural, I told the nurse I
was ready for it.
The
head of anesthesia was there that day and he came in and
took care of my epidural. He did an awesome job...
explained everything the whole way through. It was a bit
uncomfy and it did hurt, but the worst was just the weird
pressure I felt when he put the cathetar in my back. Very
weird feeling... within minutes it was over and it started
kicking in full force. Everyone re-joined the room and I
was ready for popcorn and a movie. I was sooo relaxed and
actually enjoyed every bit of the rest of my labor and
delivery.
My
doctor poked his head in at some point... we were hoping
to deliver during his lunch break so he didn't have to
miss any of his patients at the office. LOL. About noonish
we called my dad to come pick up McKenzie. He lives about
20 minutes or so from the hospital and said he was going
to leave shortly.
Sometime
around 12:15 or so I started REALLY having the urge to
push. I felt no pain, just pressure. LOTS of pressure.
They checked me (I still remember Lori telling me that she
felt LOTS of hair on baby's head) and I was at 10... so
they called my doctor, who was just across the parking lot
in his office. Looks like he was going to get his lunch
break delivery after all! He got his scrubs on and I
hunkered down to push. I felt like with every push my head
was going to explode. It felt like instead of pushing down
all my pushing was staying in my head. Very weird feeling,
but I did something right... must have been anxious to
find out what my little surprise baby was -- because at
12:48 my beautiful baby girl was born. She was purple and
covered with white stuff... but she was perfect, And yes a
BABY GIRL! No tears no cuts - nothing! She weighed 7lb
11oz and was 19" long. She looked SOOO tiny to me..
and her head just looked itsy bitsy (it was 31.5 cm).
My
dad did not get there in time and at some point McKenzie
fell asleep on the couch in the room anyway, so my 2 year
old daughter slept through the delivery of her baby
sister! Daddy woke her up just after baby got swaddled
(she was very cold and had a hard time regulating her
temp. but she did okay after a bit). McKenzie was attached
to her from the start! She helped Daddy and Lori give baby
no name a bath (yep, she did not have a name until the day
we left the hospital!!).
Grandpa
showed up shortly after and the other visitors we had in
the hospital were Brian and Crystal and Connor and
Brittney. We stayed until Sunday (we could have left Sat
but the nurses encouraged me to stay one more night) - and
I'm so happy we did. I got a jump start on recovery by
staying that extra day. And the hospital food wasn't all
that bad! Plus I had some extra help with breastfeeding as
well.
We
finally decided on a name... we went back and forth
between Bailey Madison and Madison Bailey as well as
Bailey Grace. She looked like a Bailey to me and Daddy
liked that name better so that's what we picked.
There
you have it - Bailey Madison's birth story!! THE END!
Love at First Sight!
