How To Make Your Own Fruit and Vegetable Wash We have an abundance of wild blackberries around our yard. The kids look forward to picking them all summer long and they turn ripe right around mid-August and last through mid-September. There are no pesticides on our blackberries or chemicals of any kind, but they are wild and they do have little bugs and lots of dust/dirt, etc. I looked at our local Supermarket for a product called FIT fruit and veggie wash, which I have never bought before in my life. Several years ago, I believe I tested it through Start Sampling, or some similar site, but never been one to do much more to my fruits/veggies than give them a good scrub/soak and water rinse. But with these little berries my kids bring in, I thought I'd check it out again, as when we eat them, I want to make sure they are clean. $5.79 for a 32oz bottle of the FIT was what I came up with. I decided to try to figure out what is in the product and see if I could come up with something similar with ingredients from my own pantry, considering the FIT product is supposed to be 100% natural, there must be a cheaper way! FIT contains oleic acid (an 8-carbon fatty acid) and glycerol which would serve as surfactants to help lift and remove dirt from the surface of produce. FIT also contains ethyl alcohol (from corn), citric acid and distilled grapefruit oil. FIT does not claim to remove bacteria, but label claims state that it "Removes 98% more chemicals and wax than water alone!" What I came up with is: 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice 1 Tbsp Baking Soda 1 Cup Water
Combine and put in a spray bottle, keep by sink so you can spray all your fruits and veggies with this solution. Totally natural, easy, and costs pennies to make!
