Las Vegas

We just returned from a 4 day stay at Treasure Island Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. This was my first time to Vegas and David's... well, let's just say he's been there a few times. I really have no complaints about our stay, we had a fabulous time. The only thing I would think to caution anyone about is the heat. If you are not used to high temps, beweare of the summer heat in Las Vegas.

We had been psyching ourselves up for the dramatic weather change (we left behind 70 degree weather for 110 and up weather - big change!), but there is nothing to prepare youself for this kind of heat, I'm telling you! We touched down at MacCarron Airport at around 8am, and the pilot said it was 90 degrees. I thought, not too bad. David quickly reminded me that it was only 8 AM! Take your own water from home. Take those two carryons and fill it with water bottles. The cheapest water you will find in Vegas, other than the $1 tip bottles you can get at the tables in the casinos, is $2.50 a bottle! There were some vendors on the strip selling them for a buck a bottle, but we only saw those a few times we were there. WATER! The heat just zaps the life out of you. Of course, I'm a wimp when it comes to heat.... I hate it, but that was my ONLY problem when I was in Vegas!

Our hotel was gorgeous, our room was attractive and clean. We stayed in a standard king room, with a strip view. I suggest checking in on a non-weekend day. We checked in at right around 10am (they post that check in is 3pm!) on a Thursday and we were able to get the 19th floor, with a strip view. Our view was FANTASTIC.

The hotel staff was wonderful, everyone was very nice and friendly. I enjoyed the atmosphere. Treasure Island used to be more of a family friendly place, but has sort of turned toward the single 20's and 30's crowd. We still saw alot of families there, though, I'd say more than any other casino we walked through.

One small downfall to TI, was... the signage. When walking through the casino, there are just not enough signs. I was forever getting turned around. There are two elevator corridors and each one has sets of elevators for different levels of rooms, so you have to watch where you are getting on!

We did the casino hopping thing while we were there, went to several of the bigger ones and checked out the Dolphin Habitat and Sigfreid & Roy's Secret Garden (see the photo gallery for pictures of our visit there). We enjoyed several of the shows, a country topless show called Bareback at Harrah's, a magic show at the Stardust by Rick Thomas, and "O" by Cirque Du Soleil at the Bellagio. We also went downtown and saw the Freemont Street Experience, which was excellent. We also walked through Fashion Mall, which I will have to go back to when I leave my anti-shopping husband at home.

We utilized the double decker bus (Las Vegas public transit I believe) The Deuce and the monorail. I liked both, the price tag on the Deuce was much easier on the pocket book at $2 per ticket. The monorail was very fast, but didn't cut out as much of the walking as the Deuce and it was $15 for an all day pass. It stopped at chunks of hotels on the strip, so you could get out at 1 and walk to a few others. Oh and we also took a cab one time, which cost $20 to get from downtown to our hotel - not too bad, especially considering it helped us avoid having to take the Deuce at midnight.

As I said before we arrived on Thursday, everything was kind of low key, not a lot of people around. By Friday afternoon, the place was hopping. There were people everywhere, in the streets, in the hotels, at the tables, EVERYWHERE. Just like David said the Craps tables were lots of fun, I didn't find them that enjoyable as the first 3 times we played, I lost $$, but not as much as the guy next to us our last day there. He threw a stack of $100 bills on the table, must have been $10,000 or maybe even more and he lost it all in one roll of the dice. Ouch.

I did fairly well with Pai Gow Poker, which is now "my game". I didn't play Poker at all, which is what I always play up here at the smaller casinos on the Indian Reservations around here. David played a little, but all in all, we didn't hit it big or win alot. We lost a little, won a little, spent ALOT on dining and entertainment, but it was a great time... and I can't wait to go back!
